How do I fit a modern mattress into an antique poster bed?

Many older frames were built to historical dimensions rather than standard modern mattress sizes. Buyers often need to commission bespoke mattress bases or adapt the internal support slats. Checking the internal length and width measurements before purchase ensures a proper fit for standard bedding without altering the original side rails.

Are these beds difficult to assemble?

Traditional wooden frames utilise heavy posts, headboards, and side rails connected by substantial bed bolts or pegged joints. Assembling them requires at least two people and careful handling of heavy timbers. Metal half tester frames generally involve simpler bolted joints, though brass components still demand careful alignment during setup.

How do I care for polished wood and brass frames?

Wooden surfaces require occasional dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of appropriate furniture wax to nourish the grain. Harsh chemical cleaners must be avoided on antique finishes. Brass and iron components benefit from gentle cleaning to maintain their metal surfaces without stripping patinas built up over decades or centuries.

Can I use fabric hangings with a tester frame?

The overhead tester framework was originally designed to support curtains and drapery for warmth and privacy. Modern rooms can accommodate lightweight fabrics draped over the rails. Securing curtains safely to the tester requires careful consideration of the specific wooden or metal canopy construction without straining ancient joints.
