What periods do these pillar candlesticks come from?

The available selection spans several centuries, ranging from seventeenth century carved wooden forms to Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian examples. Nineteenth and early twentieth century pieces are particularly common. Craftsmanship shifts across these eras, moving from hand-carved baroque timber to neoclassical brass columns and later silver plated designs.

How were these tall candlesticks used originally?

These pieces served practical lighting functions in domestic homes, churches, and grand reception rooms before electricity became widespread. Their height allowed candles to project light further across a dining table or mantelpiece. Many heavier items, such as church candlesticks or monumental wooden torchers, were designed to stand directly on the floor or large furniture surfaces.

Can antique pillar candlesticks be used as lamps?

Many examples are already converted to function as table lamps or lamp bases, while others retain their original candle sockets. Converting solid brass or wooden columns is a common practice that preserves the antique pillar form. Buyers often select these items for their architectural silhouette when updating domestic lighting schemes.

How do I distinguish brass from silver plated examples?

Brass pieces show a golden metallic alloy throughout their structure, sometimes developing a dark patina over time. Silver plated items display a white metal coating over a base metal, which may reveal copper beneath where wear occurs. Sterling silver items carry official hallmarks indicating metal purity and origin, whereas plated and brass items rely on visual and tactile inspection.
