What is a gimbal lamp?

A gimbal lamp uses a set of concentric pivoting rings to keep the light source upright regardless of how the ship tilts or rolls. This clever mechanism prevented oil from spilling and maintained steady illumination in rough seas. In domestic settings today, these lamps offer a distinct mechanical aesthetic and function effectively as desk or wall lighting.

How do I identify a ship lantern?

Authentic ship lanterns feature heavy brass or copper construction, thick protective glass lenses, and mounting brackets for attachment to bulkheads or rigging. They often bear manufacturer plaques and directional markings like port or starboard. These utilitarian objects were built to withstand salt water and heavy weather, resulting in substantial weight and durable construction.

Where were these lights used?

Original maritime lights served aboard working vessels, passenger ships, and lighthouses to provide navigation signals, deck illumination, and interior lighting. Some specialised designs functioned equally on trains. Transferred to land, they bring industrial and maritime history into studies, hallways, and living spaces.

How do I care for brass and copper?

Metal surfaces benefit from gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with appropriate non-abrasive metal polishes if a bright finish is desired. Many collectors prefer to preserve the existing aged patination without aggressive cleaning. Keeping wooden elements and electrical fittings dry ensures the long-term stability of lamps and decorative objects.
