What were antique marble bedside cabinets used for?

These cabinets served as bedside storage units holding nighttime necessities while providing a durable, wipe-clean surface for lamps and water jugs. The enclosed lower compartment traditionally concealed chamber pots, keeping the bedroom tidy and functional before modern plumbing.

How do I identify French regional styles?

French pieces often display revival aesthetics such as Louis XV or Louis XVI curves, cabriole legs, and elaborate floral marquetry. Provincial variants lean toward simpler oak constructions, whereas courtly versions utilise kingwood, satinwood, and gilded bronze mounts.

Are pairs difficult to find?

Matched pairs survive from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, originally commissioned to flank larger bed frames in grand chambers. Single cabinets appear frequently, reflecting domestic arrangements where only one bedside pedestal was utilised in smaller rooms.

How do I care for the marble top?

Marble requires gentle cleaning with mild soap and water, avoiding acidic substances that can etch the polished stone surface. Using coasters and mats prevents staining on antique limestone and marble slabs while preserving the original finish.
