What is included in an antique mantel set?

A standard set consists of a central timekeeper, such as a mantel clock, accompanied by a matching pair of side ornaments like vases or candelabra. These matching elements were designed to create visual balance when arranged together on a mantelpiece or sideboard.

How do I care for marble and bronze?

Dust marble surfaces gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners that can scratch the polished stone. Bronze and ormolu mounts require only light dusting to preserve their historic patination and protective wax layers.

Are the clock movements original?

Many nineteenth-century sets retain their original mechanical movements, which use pendulum regulation and key winding. Some pieces may show evidence of past servicing or professional restoration to ensure the mechanism remains in working order.

How do I match replacement pieces?

Matching individual items to an existing set proves difficult due to variations in period manufacturing, sizing, and specific decorative motifs. Sets are best collected and displayed as complete units originating from the same workshop and period.
