What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall storage unit featuring upper doors that enclose sliding trays, positioned above a chest of lower drawers. They originated for storing folded household linens. Over time, many of these presses were converted to hanging wardrobes by removing the internal trays to accommodate modern clothing rails.

How do I date a mahogany armoire?

Dating relies on architectural styling, construction methods, and timber choice. Georgian pieces often display bracket feet and classical cornices, while Edwardian examples show lighter inlays and satinwood accents. Examining drawer linings and dovetails reveals the hand tools and methods used during manufacture, helping to distinguish 18th-century work from later revival periods.

Will a large wardrobe dismantle?

Most large wardrobes and linen presses separate into modular components for transport and installation. Cornish sections, side panels, middle hanging compartments, and base drawer units typically unbolt or lift apart. This modular construction allowed cabinet makers to deliver heavy timber furniture into upper chamber rooms of historic houses.

How do I care for antique mahogany?

Antique mahogany benefits from stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can dry out the timber and crack veneers. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth preserves the wax finish. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally nourishes the grain and maintains the deep reddish-brown patina developed over centuries.
