What are antique log dogs?

Antique log dogs are metal supports placed inside a hearth to hold burning timber. They lift wood off the floor to encourage better airflow. These objects serve both a practical purpose and a decorative function in traditional fireplaces. They remain central to open hearth setups.

How do you use andirons?

Andirons sit inside the fireplace opening with their vertical columns facing outward into the room. Logs rest across the horizontal bars between them. This positioning prevents wood from rolling forward and helps maintain a steady fire. The arrangement allows ash to fall safely beneath the fuel.

What materials are they made from?

Most examples utilise cast iron, wrought iron, or brass. Steel and copper also appear across various periods. Different metals suited different domestic interiors, ranging from simple forged iron for utility spaces to polished brass for formal parlours.

How do I date a pair?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, manufacturing marks, and the specific metals employed. Victorian and Georgian pieces often exhibit distinct decorative motifs. Hand-forging techniques can indicate earlier periods, while machine finishing points to later nineteenth and twentieth century production.
