What is a hock wine glass?

A hock glass is a tall vessel traditionally used for serving German white wines, characterised by a long stem and a coloured bowl. These pieces often feature green or amber glass designed to mask the sediment of older white wines.

How do I date an antique glass?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, pontil marks on the base, and the weight and composition of the lead crystal. Victorian and Edwardian examples show distinct manufacturing techniques and decorative motifs compared to later twentieth century pieces.

Can I use antique hock glasses?

These glasses can be used for special occasions, provided they receive careful hand washing to protect enamel and gold leaf. Avoid extreme temperature changes to prevent stress fractures in delicate antique lead glass.

Why are most hock glasses green?

Green glass tradition stems from early Rhenish production methods where iron impurities in the sand created natural green hues. Later makers continued this aesthetic because the rich colour complemented white wine and added drama to the table setting.
