What is an antique gypsy band?

An antique gypsy band is a nineteenth or early twentieth century ring featuring stones set flush into a thick gold hoop. The smooth profile protects the gems and provides a comfortable fit. These pieces often include starburst engravings and utilise diamonds, rubies, or sapphires. They represent a distinct period of accessible yet secure everyday jewellery.

How do I know my ring size?

You can determine your ring size by measuring the internal diameter of an existing ring that fits the desired finger. Alternatively, a local jeweller can measure your finger accurately using standard sizing tools. Keep in mind that wider bands often require a slightly larger size than thin rings to ensure a comfortable fit. Consider the solid shoulders of these bands when selecting your measurements.

Can I wear my ring daily?

Yes, these rings were originally built for everyday wear due to their flush settings. The lack of high claws means the stones will not easily catch on fabric or daily objects. However, it remains wise to remove the ring during heavy manual work or swimming. Regular checks by a jeweller ensure the metal surrounding the flush stones stays secure.

How do I date these rings?

Dating relies heavily upon official hallmarks stamped inside the gold band, which indicate specific assay offices and production years. Stylistic clues such as starburst engravings, boat-shaped settings, and specific gemstone cuts also point toward Victorian or Edwardian origins. Comparing the gold weight, shank profile, and stone characteristics helps narrow the decade of manufacture. Hallmarks remain the most definitive guide for precise dating.
