How do I wire an antique gilded light fixture?

Most antique fixtures require rewiring by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards before installation in a contemporary home. Electricians can carefully thread modern wiring through the existing brass or bronze channels without altering the exterior appearance. Professionals should also ensure the mounting hardware can support the combined weight of the metal frame and crystal components safely from the ceiling joists.

What rooms suit a French chandelier?

Chandeliers featuring gilt bronze, crystal drops and classical French styling suit principal reception rooms, dining areas and high-ceilinged entrance halls. Their scale and reflective qualities add a strong focal point to spaces designed for entertaining. Smaller variants, such as twin-arm wall lights or compact lanterns, fit comfortably into bedrooms, corridors and drawing rooms where lower ceiling heights demand restrained proportions.

How do I clean an antique light fixture?

Dusting requires a soft feather duster or dry microfibre cloth to remove surface particles gently from the metalwork and crystal drops. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that might strip the original gilt or damage delicate porcelain flowers. Crystal elements can occasionally be wiped with a damp cloth using mild soapy water while still attached, or carefully removed and washed individually if the fixings permit.

What is the difference between a sconce and a girandole?

A standard wall sconce is a bracket fixture attached directly to the wall to hold candles or electric bulbs, focusing on metal arms and decorative backplates. A girandole specifically incorporates a mirrored backplate designed to reflect and multiply the light. Both types serve similar lighting functions in hallways and living spaces, but girandoles offer an extra layer of visual depth through their reflective glass surfaces.
