How do I clean an antique glass cabinet?

Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to dust the wooden surfaces and avoid harsh chemical sprays that might damage polished finishes or veneer. Clean the glass panes with a mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the glass, preventing liquid seeping into the wooden frame or ormolu mounts.

Where should I place a display bookcase?

Position the cabinet away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the timber veneers from drying out, warping, or cracking over time. Ensure the floor is level so the heavy glass doors hang correctly and latch smoothly without straining the antique hinges.

How do I date a french display bookcase?

Examine the timber species, construction methods, and secondary woods used inside the carcass, as nineteenth-century pieces often employ distinct framing styles compared to later revival items. Stylistic cues such as ormolu mount design, marquetry patterns, and the presence of revival markers like Louis XV or Empire motifs provide reliable clues to the decade of manufacture.

Can adjustable shelves hold heavy books?

Open library bookcases and larger wooden shelving units are generally constructed from solid oak, walnut, or mahogany designed to support heavy volumes. Check the thickness of the shelves and the stability of the support pegs before loading them with dense collections, particularly in older or provincial pieces.
