How were antique floral display vases used?

These vessels served primarily to display freshly cut flowers in parlours and drawing rooms during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Larger forms acted as decorative centrepieces on tables or filled empty fireplace hearths during warmer months. Many examples were also created purely as ornamental display pieces to showcase wealth and taste, remaining empty rather than holding water on a daily basis.

Where should I place a floral display vase?

Position your vessel on sturdy surfaces such as sideboards, mantelpieces, or dedicated plant and jardiniere stands where the weight is fully supported. Ensure tall or top-heavy pieces sit away from high-traffic areas to prevent accidental knocks. Keeping them out of direct, harsh sunlight prevents the fading of delicate hand-painted enamels and gold leaf highlights over time.

How can I tell the period of a vase?

Examine the base for factory marks, cyphers, or registration numbers that correlate with known operational dates for potteries like Royal Worcester or Minton. Stylistic clues, such as the aesthetic motifs of the Victorian era or the clean lines of later periods, also offer a reliable guide. The choice of materials, manufacturing technique, and wear patterns on the underside provide physical evidence of age and origin.
