What is an antique fitted vanity chest?

An antique fitted vanity chest is a portable or table-standing box designed to hold personal grooming items, cosmetics, and jewellery. These pieces feature internal compartments, trays, and often glass bottles with silver caps to keep personal effects organised during travel or at home.

How do I date an antique vanity box?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction methods, and hardware styles used by the cabinet maker. Georgian pieces tend to show simpler mahogany lines, while Victorian examples often incorporate burr walnut, brass inlay, and complex folding mechanisms. Maker's marks stamped on locks or leather interiors also help pinpoint the exact decade of manufacture.

Were these chests used for travel?

Many examples on this page, particularly campaign styles and travelling cases, were built specifically for journeys. They incorporate sturdy carrying handles, secure brass locks, and tightly fitted interior components to ensure contents survived rough carriage or ship transport.

How should I care for the wood and leather?

Maintain the timber surfaces by applying appropriate wax polish sparingly to preserve the natural grain and patina of rosewood or mahogany. Protect internal velvet and leather linings from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent fading and degradation.
