How do I care for an old oil canvas?

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and rapid temperature fluctuations to prevent cracking in the paint layers. Avoid touching the canvas surface and consult a professional conservator for cleaning. Dust the wooden frames gently with a soft, dry brush. Ensure hanging hardware is securely fastened to support the weight of the canvas and its frame.

What is an old master painting?

An old master generally refers to a European painter of skill working prior to the nineteenth century. These pieces reflect historical artistic training and academic standards. Works from this category often carry significant historical documentation and established attribution to specific workshops or circles of artists.

How can I tell the age of a canvas?

Examination of the stretcher frames, weave density, and preparation grounds provides clues to a painting's age. Older pieces often feature handmade wooden wedges and hand-woven linen supports. Stylistic elements, costume details in portraits, and framing styles also help narrow down the period of creation.

Are these paintings ready to hang?

Most antique canvases arrive fitted with appropriate hanging wire or brackets attached to the frame. Collectors should verify the strength of the wall fixings before mounting heavy framed pieces. Checking the stability of the stretcher keys and canvas tension ensures the artwork remains secure over time.
