What is an antique tantalus?

A tantalus is a locking drink stand that holds decanters in a wooden or metal frame. The locking bar prevents people from pouring a drink without the key. Victorian households used these to secure spirits from servants or guests while keeping the bottles on display in the dining room or library.

How do I date an oak tantalus?

Dating relies on the style of the woodwork, hardware, and registration marks on the silver plating or locks. Pieces from the nineteenth century often feature heavy oak frames with brass mounts. Later Edwardian versions continued these forms with slight variations in the engraving and handle shapes, while Georgian and Regency pieces appeared as simpler boxes or coasters.

What is a games compendium?

A games compendium is a fitted box that houses drinking decanters alongside equipment for parlour games such as cards or chess. These multi-purpose items were popular in country houses for evening entertainment. The setup allowed hosts to serve liqueurs while opening the internal trays for gaming.

How should I clean silver plated stands?

Silver plated stands require gentle cleaning with a specialist cloth designed for plated items to avoid wearing away the thin silver layer. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided on antique mounts. Glass decanters can be washed separately in warm water with a bottle brush to clear any residue from the interior.
