What is a dovetail trunk?

A dovetail trunk is a wooden storage box joined at the corners by interlocking fingers of timber. This construction method creates a durable bond that withstands heavy lifting and travel without requiring metal brackets.

How old are these trunks?

The trunks listed span several centuries, with the majority originating in the Victorian era. Earlier examples date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while others bear dates around nineteen hundred.

What woods were used?

Makers utilised a variety of softwoods and hardwoods depending on the intended destination and function of the trunk. Pine and pitch pine appear frequently in domestic blanket boxes, while teak, camphor wood, and walnut are found in campaign and specialised storage pieces.

How can I use one at home?

These trunks serve as functional storage furniture for blankets, bedding, and household items in living spaces or bedrooms. Many examples function effectively as coffee tables, fireside bins, or seating benches while concealing everyday clutter.
