What were antique dome trunks used for?

These trunks served primarily for transporting personal belongings during travel by coach, ship, or train. Households also utilised them for storing blankets, garments, and valuables. Over time, their sturdy construction and distinctive profiles made them practical storage solutions that doubled as prominent furniture pieces within domestic interiors.

How do I identify the period of a trunk?

Dating relies heavily on examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, ironwork styles, and types of fasteners used. Materials and decorative motifs, like Georgian oak or painted Scandinavian folk art, offer further chronological clues. Hardware such as locks, hinges, and handles often reflects the manufacturing technology and aesthetic preferences of specific decades.

How do I clean and care for leather trunks?

Leather-clad trunks require gentle dusting and occasional conditioning with appropriate conservation waxes to prevent the hide from drying and cracking. Avoid using modern chemical cleaners or excessive moisture on aged surfaces. Keeping these pieces out of direct sunlight and away from rapid temperature changes helps preserve both the leather and the underlying wooden structure.

Where should I place a dome trunk at home?

A dome trunk functions effectively as a coffee table in a living room, providing internal storage while introducing textural contrast. They also sit well at the foot of a bed or serve as hallway storage. Ensure the chosen spot maintains stable humidity levels to protect older woods, iron, and painted finishes from environmental damage.
