What is an antique decanter base used for?

These pieces protect dining tables from moisture rings and stains left by bottles and decanters. They also provide a stable platform for serving wine. Historically, coasters were passed around the table after the meal, sliding easily across the polished wood surface.

How do I date a silver coaster?

Silver coasters often carry hallmarks indicating the assay office, maker, and year of manufacture. Stylistic clues like Georgian piercing or Edwardian proportions also help determine age. Silver-plated items rely on the style of the mount and the manufacturing technique, such as Old Sheffield plating versus later electroplating.

Are wooden coasters lined?

Many wooden bottle coasters feature turned mahogany bases fitted with a central button or felt lining underneath. This protects both the table and the base of the bottle. The interior base often includes a green baize or felt insert to cushion the glass decanter.

What is a table plateau?

A table plateau is a large mirrored or wooden base used to display a collection of decanters and glassware together. They distribute weight and protect the table surface. Mirrored plateaux reflect light upwards through crystal decanters, creating a decorative centrepiece for the dining room.
