What were counter top cabinets used for originally?

Merchants utilised them to display items such as soap, chocolate, pencils, and pharmaceutical products, often featuring brand names to entice buyers at the point of purchase.

How do I date an antique cabinet?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, timber types, and overall style visible in the frame and hardware. Victorian pieces tend to be heavier in construction, whereas Edwardian and later twentieth-century examples often display lighter framing and different commercial branding styles.

Are the glass panels usually original?

Many cabinets retain their original glass, which often exhibits minor surface irregularities, bubbles, or waves consistent with older manufacturing methods. Replacement glass does occur due to the fragile nature of shop display pieces, so examining the edges and fit helps determine originality.
