What is an antique fob seal?

A fob seal is a small ornamental pendant used historically to stamp wax impressions on letters and documents. They were typically attached to watch chains and carried by gentlemen. Many examples feature carved stones or hardstones set in gold or brass mounts, often bearing initials, crests, or classical figures.

How do you care for antique wax items?

Antique wax and delicate carved pieces require stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Warmth can soften or distort the material. Handling should be kept to a minimum, using clean hands or cotton gloves to protect vulnerable carved surfaces from oils.

What materials are found in these pieces?

These items incorporate organic wax alongside supporting structures of gold, brass, iron, and gilt metal. Many related seals utilise hardstones like carnelian and bloodstone. Wood elements finished with traditional wax coatings also appear in the broader selection of historic furnishings.

How are periods identified?

Periods are determined by stylistic conventions, mounting techniques, and hallmarks stamped on the metal components. Georgian and Victorian pieces show distinct shifts in decorative motifs. Detailed intaglio subjects and metalwork styles help specialists place items within the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
