What are antique barware bottles?

These items encompass glass decanters, spirit flagons, hip flasks, and bottle holders produced across the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. They served practical functions in domestic dining and entertaining. Today, they function both as decorative objects and usable vessels for serving wine and spirits from the period of their origin.

How do I date a cut glass decanter?

Dating relies on characteristics such as the depth and pattern of the glass cutting, the shape of the neck rings, and the presence of pontil marks on the base. Georgian and early Victorian pieces often feature hand-cut facets and distinct stoppers. Associated silver mounts, where present, carry hallmarks with date letters that provide a precise year of manufacture.

How were wine coasters used?

Wine coasters protected polished mahogany dining tables from moisture rings and drips during dinner parties. They were slid across the table after the meal to circulate the bottle among guests. Many examples feature felt or turned wooden bases to facilitate smooth movement across the wood surface.

A tantalus is a locking wooden stand that holds two or three decanters securely in place. The frame prevents guests or servants from accessing the contents without a key. Developed in the Victorian era, they were typically displayed on sideboards in the dining room or study.
