Where should I display an alabaster bust?

Place your bust on a sturdy surface away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and areas prone to high humidity. Alabaster reacts poorly to extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture, which can cause the stone to degrade over time. Consider setting the sculpture on a dedicated plant stand or a high pedestal where adequate lighting highlights the translucent quality of the carved stone. Ensure the support is stable, as heavy stone pieces are vulnerable to tipping if placed near edges.

Are these busts solid alabaster?

Many nineteenth-century examples are carved from solid blocks of alabaster, though some pieces combine alabaster heads with marble bases, bronze shoulders, or brass mountings. Makers frequently paired different stones to create contrast in colour and texture. Examining the underside or the transition points between materials reveals whether the sculpture is carved from a single piece or assembled from multiple components. Mixed media works often incorporate gilt bronze or ormolu elements alongside the stone.

How can I tell the period of a bust?

Dating relies on stylistic indicators such as the subject's hairstyle, clothing, and the artistic movement reflected in the carving. Art Nouveau pieces display flowing organic lines, while Victorian works often feature classical drapery and romanticized expressions. Signatures, foundry marks, and accompanying material choices like ormolu or spelter provide further clues to the decade of creation. Comparing the sculptural technique to known signed works from continental European makers helps narrow down the production era.
