Culvertons' gallery is in the heart of Dorking's historic antique quarter where our stock of decorative antiques and artwork are on show - we are open every Friday & Saturday between the hours of 10 am - 5 30 pm or by appointment. Viewing at all other times can be arranged by appointment.
Culvertons also undertake fine art & antique valuations, restoration & conservation projects, and provide a broad range of probate & estate services. Jonathan Roberts, owner & Culvertons' general valuer, is happy to answer any questions and offer advice regarding the services we provide.
Culvertons are also actively looking to purchase the antique, the decorative, the rare, the rustic, the refined, the bizarre, the interesting and occasionally the broken and the wormy - if you think you may have items of interest please send us images by email or call into the gallery. Restoring and retailing our own stock enables us to compete favourably with values achieved at auction - however, in-line with Culvertons' ethical working practises, clients will always receive the correct advice to make an informed choice on how to maximise the revenue from a particular item.
Throughout the mid 1980’s Jonathan Roberts was a sales manager for a firm of wholesalers specialising in the supply of traditional antique restoration materials. During this period, with the help and kindness from some of his selfless customers, he was able to build upon his knowledge of antique furniture and works of art. Fulfilling a childhood passion he embarked upon a new career as an antique dealer in 1989.
By 1994, an apprenticeship as a ‘runner’* to the London antique and fine art trade had been served. Over the next fifteen years Jonathan opened several antique shops within the South West of London, and Surrey, and regularly held selling exhibitions of oil paintings and ‘works on paper’ in Buckinghamshire, and throughout the South East of England.
In 2009 Jonathan accepted an invitation to become a director of Culvertons - a young probate valuation company based in Betchworth, Surrey. After becoming sole director in 2012, he increased the services on offer. This was possible by the engagement of specialist dealers, restorers and conservators – a few were customers from Jonathan’s days as a sales manager; all were willing to work in an ethical and professional manner.
Culvertons (www.culvertons.com) is currently able to value, conserve and restore a wide spectrum of antiques and works of art for solicitors, executors, businesses and private individuals - always willingly giving advice, thus completing a cycle started 30 years ago.
