Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French settee, often termed a canape, is a multi-person upholstered seat featuring an exposed hand-carved timber frame. Popularised during the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras, these pieces incorporate cabriole or tapered legs, curved armrests, and decorative textiles such as woven tapestry.

Frames were typically carved from native hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak, occasionally finished with gilding or paint. The upholstery relied on natural fillings like horsehair and jute webbing, faced with hand-woven wool or silk tapestries secured by iron tacks.

Authentic pieces feature pegged mortise and tenon joints rather than modern screws or glue. Look for irregular hand-carving marks along the seat rail, hand-forged iron upholstery tacks, and historical wear patterns on the lower legs and arm supports.

Place the settee as a focal statement piece in an entryway, drawing room, or beneath a gallery wall. Contrast the detailed tapestry and carved timber frame against neutral wall finishes and minimalist contemporary accents.

Keep the settee away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent textile fading and timber shrinkage. Vacuum the tapestry gently using a low-suction brush attachment protected by a fine mesh screen.
