Antique Garnet Drop Earrings

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Eva Antiques
Description

A beautiful pair of earrings from the late Victorian/early Edwardian period, c1900s, made during a time for Georgian revival jewels. The earrings are made from 9ct gold that has a very slight rosy tint to it and have pretty flat cut garnets set in closed back settings. The garnets are in a little sequence of one round, one oval and one pear and are a lovely deep red colour. The earrings are fairly lightweight making them very easy to wear and the hooks look to be a later addition. Overall, they are in very good order and look beautiful in the ear.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Garnet jewellery gained massive popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras, symbolising passion, loyalty, and devotion. Drop earrings featuring multi-tiered faceted garnets were particularly favoured for evening wear due to the way the dark stones captured candlelight.

Antique garnet earrings typically featured faceted pyrope or almandine garnets mounted in gold, silver gilt, or pinchbeck settings. The stones were cut into rose cuts, ovals, or pears and linked with small wire hoops to allow fluid articulated movement.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit minor hand-cut facet irregularities, closed-back or crimped bezel settings, and period fittings such as shepherd hooks. A deep red colour with subtle orange or purple undertones is also characteristic of historical natural garnets.

These drop earrings add rich colour and historical detail to modern minimalist outfits, pairing effectively with tailored blazers or dark evening dresses. Their warm undertones complement both contemporary yellow gold and mixed-metal accessories.

Clean antique garnet jewellery gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding immersion in water or chemical cleaners if foil-backed settings are present. Store them individually in a soft pouch to prevent harder gemstones from scratching the metal and garnet surfaces.
