18thc Engraving of Achilles and Chiron the Centaur C1750

18th century
Description

An 18thc engraving of a classical scene depicting the youthful Achilles and his tutor the centaur Chiron, c1750. The scene is complex and dynamic with the figures engaged in discussion and study, surrounded by the objects of learning, books, musical instruments and a globe. Achilles was sent by his father as a youth to be educated by Chiron the centaur but the scene also foreshadows Achilles’ future as a warrior, with the owl, representing Athena goddess of war, perched in the tree. The engraving is inscribed with the initials CCG and M and a date 1758 on the column to the right of the picture. The picture is double mounted in a black contemporary frame with gilt slip. It has not been opened up to see if the names of artist and printer are hidden under the mount. In very good condition.
