Japanese Meiji/Showa bronze statue of the Holy Kannon Bodhisattva, Takamura Koun (1852-1934). A fine casting with lovely detail signed by the artist, comes with a certificate (in Japanese!). Measure 32cm (12.5in) high by 11.5cm (5.5in) base.
The Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, elegantly sculpted, stands on a circular base, holding in her left hand a delicate lotus bud stalk, her hair piled into a tall topknot and adorned with the hokan (jewelled crown). She is wearing a johaku (decorative scarf) draped diagonally from her left shoulder, spreading out across the right side of her abdomen, the folds of the garment softly rendered. The reverse of the figure signed by the artist.
Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, is one of the most popular and frequently depicted deities in Japanese Buddhism. Kannon grants deliverance from suffering to anyone who calls upon his name.
Superb condition and patina.
