George III Silver Toothpick Box Georgian C.1810

Description

A fine Georgian silver toothpick box with machine engraved panels to the base and hinged cover, the latter framed with a cast frieze of flowers and foliage. In the centre is a vacant cartouche. Raised edging to the rims decorated with tightly engraved diagonal lines and a tapering lip to the front cover to aid opening. Inside is gilt washed with a mirror fitted inside the cover. Marked only with maker's initials D.H probably for Daniel Hockley, c.1810-1819.

It measures 8cm (3 1/8") long, 2.5cm (1") deep and 1.5cm (5/8") high and weighs 43g / 1.4ozt.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair. Three pin pricks dints to the rim of the base and two small areas of the machine engraving on the base that have been rubbed smooth. Minor handling wear otherwise and the hinge is good. The mirror will be a replacement and is immaculate.
