Neoclassical mirror design emerged in the mid-18th century as a revival of classical Greek and Roman aesthetics, characterised by symmetrical silhouettes, architectural pediments, urns, medallioned crests, and restrained decorative scrollwork.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using carved timber frames overlaid with gesso, detailed with hand-applied gold leaf gilding, and finished with painted paintwork and silvered or mercury glass plates.
