Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silhouette portrait is a profile likeness rendered as a solid dark shape, often created using black ink, watercolour, or cut paper mounted against a pale backing. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these portraits offered an accessible method of capturing a persons likeness prior to widespread studio photography.

Artisans typically executed these works on woven paper using Indian ink, watercolour wash, or bronzing powder to add highlights to clothing and hair. They were commonly set behind glass within stained wooden frames featuring gilded interior sight edges or turned brass mounts.

Authentic period pieces frequently exhibit age-appropriate paper discolouration, foxing, and fine hand-painted bronzed details highlighting garment contours. Examining the frame construction, paper backing, and oxidisation on gilded elements helps distinguish originals from later reproductions.

Silhouette portraits integrate effectively into gallery wall arrangements alongside monochrome prints or architectural drawings. Grouping small profile pictures in narrow hallways, alcoves, or above sideboards creates a structured focal point within traditional and eclectic interiors.

Position paper artworks away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading, paper warping, and foxing. Ensure the piece is protected behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free backing, and dust the wooden frame periodically with a soft, dry cloth.
