Solid Bronze Half-bushel Imperial Measure for the Borough of Accrington, Lancashire, C.1932

1920 - 1940
Description

A good solid bronze Half-Bushel imperial measure for the Borough of Accrington, Lancashire. Made (and stamped to the base) by De Grave Short & Co Ltd. London and numbered 4457. This polished bronze measure features integral bronze handles with polished rosewood grips.

There is no stamped date, however the earliest Customs & Excise stamp on the lower rim is 1932, followed by 1941, 1951 and the latest 1961. Other stamps exist for Queen Elizabeth II; George IV and George V.

These measures were until fairly recently (1960's) used by Council officials to randomly inspect and enforce accurate weights and measures in marketplaces across the country. As such these 'Measures' were in turn inspected by Customs and Excise and checked for accuracy every 10 years, approval resulted in the date stamps around the lower rim.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
