Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the reign of King George III in late 18th-century Britain, these substantial tables were created as functional focal points for private libraries and studies. They typically feature fine mahogany construction, expansive leather-inset writing surfaces, and multiple frieze drawers designed to accommodate several users simultaneously.

Craftspeople primarily utilised solid mahogany alongside high-grade veneers, often incorporating hand-tooled leather writing surfaces. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass hardware, steel mortise locks, and turned or reeded legs fitted with castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed secondary woods such as oak or pine in drawer linings, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, and age-appropriate wear to timber finishes. Period markings on hardware, such as GR crowned ciphers on locks, also assist in verifying authenticity.

Place the table as a central focal point in a dedicated home office, open-plan study, or large foyer to anchor the room. Pair the piece with modern lighting, neutral textiles, and contemporary leather seating to balance historic craftsmanship with clean interior lines.

Preserve timber surfaces by applying a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement. Clean leather tops with a soft cloth and apply specialised leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking.
