Antique Elbow Chair, 19th Century Armchair in Chippendale Taste

19th century
Description

The out-turned, sinuous arm rests finish in a modest scroll detail and ride upon curved supports above the traditionally upholstered 'stuff-over' brown velvet seat trimmed with brass studs; showing signs of appropriate age and something that could be recovered to suit any d?ecor.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style elbow chair is defined by mid-to-late 18th-century English design influences, typically featuring a carved pierced splat back, a serpentine crest rail, shaped armrests, and cabriole front legs.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-carved decorative details, mortise and tenon joinery, and upholstered slip or drop-in seats secured with brass tacks.

Look for evidence of hand-carving along the back splat and leg knees, original corner blocks under the seat frame, natural timber patination, and period-appropriate joinery techniques rather than machine marks.

A Chippendale elbow chair functions effectively as a standalone desk seat in a home office, an accent reading chair in a living space, or as a head-of-table carver chair alongside a contemporary dining table.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood movement.
