In Greek mythology, Menelaus was a king of Mycenaean Sparta.
Despite its small size, the detailing of the facial features, hair and overall proportions are very eye-pleasing and a testament to the quality & craftsmanship of this Victorian cameo.
In addition to its intricacy, it is perhaps the historic and mythological representation recreated in different art forms/mediums which makes this cameo particularly delightful. We believe that unlike other jewellery forms (such as rings & gem cuts etc) cameos present a unique medium for artisans to showcase their artistic skills and techniques, slightly closer to the likes of paintings and sculptures. As such, the more elegant, lifelike and endearing an engraving is, it tends to become more valuable and desirable.
The border and frame are made from solid 15ct antique gold and feature a lovely twisted rope design with the gold-tone further elevating the splendour and majestic appearance of this brooch.
The reverse side of the brooch features a c-clasp pin.

The brooch is unmarked as is common with pieces of the period however we have tested it for 15ct+ high-carat gold. Please note: the pin on the reverse side, is not gold.

Condition: Good overall antique condition with no major issues/damage. There have been some old reinforcements/conversions to the rear of the gold mount where the pin is vertical to the cameo and a safety chain loop remains. This does not, however, affect the usage and cannot be seen from the front.
We aim to overemphasize and state these issues to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.
