Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A clock garniture is a decorative three-piece set popularised in eighteenth-century France, consisting of a central mantel clock flanked by two matching side ornaments, such as urns, vases, or candelabras. Designed primarily for displaying on fireplace mantels, these sets served as structural and decorative focal points in formal reception rooms.

High-quality garnitures from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were typically constructed using gilt bronze or brass (ormolu), white or coloured marble, and hand-painted porcelain or enamel dials. The metalwork was cast and chased before being gilded, providing a contrast against polished marble bases.

Authentic pieces feature finely detailed metal castings, hand-painted numerals or floral garlands on enamel dials, and stamped movement makers on the back plate, such as Japy Freres or Vincenti. Additional indicators include hand-carved marble components with natural veining and signs of original fire-gilding rather than modern lacquer or spray paint.

Position the garniture symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table. In modern settings, pairing classical gilt metalwork with understated contemporary artwork or a simple architectural mirror creates an effective visual contrast.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush for carved crevices. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners, brass polishes, or abrasive materials, as these strip original gilding and damage marble; mechanical clock movements should be serviced by a specialist horologist every five to seven years.
