Description

This extremely finely knotted vanity-bag or 'chanteh' in Persian, made by Afshar tribes in Kerman Province circa 1900-1920, contains two large, beautifully executed 'botehs' (Zoarostrian flame symbols) on a deep-indigo blue ground. On either side of each boteh is a finely-drawn 'tree-of-life' and the bag is complete with plain-weave madder-red back and tassels all the way round - symbols of good luck.

It took me a little time to notice a very interesting thing! Please take a look at the last close-up photo. In the very centre of each boteh, there appears very stylised human representation. Look closer and you might discern in the left ivory boteh a female figure and in the right, madder-red boteh, there appears a male figure! You might need to magnify the photo to observe this. So here, the young girl has very subtly suggested the hope for a child, by introducing male and female symbolism! Her knotted-pile work and plain-weave is of a very high standard, suggesting she was an exceptional weaver.
