Antique English Georgian Mason's Ironstone Mug

19th century
Description

A rare find indeed ! Not only is this lovely Early 19th Century Antique English Mason's Ironstone Mug glazed in that scarce and desirable deep blue known as Mazarine, the colour of the wings of the Mazarine Blue butterfly, but the shape of the piece is described as rare, { cf. Plate 249 }, by Geoffrey Godden in his "Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares", long regarded as the standard work of reference on the subject. The base fully impress marked MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA, the body decorated with gilt foliage and butterflies, the gilded borders and handle now understanably a little rubbed after 200 years. A museum quality item for the discerning Collector.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Masons Ironstone is a dense, durable earthenware ceramic patented by Miles Mason in Staffordshire, England, in 1813. It was developed to emulate imported Chinese porcelain using local materials, known for its heavy feel, deep cobalt glazes, and ornate painted or gilded decoration.

Georgian ironstone was crafted from a mixture of china clay, Cornish stone, flint, and slag derived from iron manufacture. The bodies were covered in opaque lead-based glazes and frequently decorated with gilded leaf motifs or cobalt blue underglazes.

Authentic Georgian pieces often feature characteristic heavy weight, cold touch, and distinct hand-applied gilding over dark cobalt grounds. Early examples typically bear impressed or printed makers marks on the base, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China, along with visible wear to the gilding consistent with age.

Antique ceramics function well as decorative accents on open kitchen shelving, mantelpieces, or stacked within a glass display cabinet. Grouping cobalt blue pieces together creates a striking monochrome focal point against neutral walls or dark timber joinery.

Clean gilded ironstone using a soft brush or a barely damp microfibre cloth without harsh chemical detergents. Avoid soaking or scrubbing the painted surfaces, as water immersion can damage vulnerable glaze crazing and dissolve delicate hand-gilded detail.
