Prattware Figure ‘Loyal Volunteer’, C. 1790.

Description

Rare Staffordshire Prattware figure of a ‘Loyal Volunteer’, c. 1790. The soldier finely modelled, wearing military costume of the day, and holding a sword in his right hand.

He stands before a tree stump, upon a grassy mound, and square base.

Decorated in vibrant Pratt glazes.

The British Volunteer Movement, was in existence between 1793-1814. It was formed in Great Britain, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, as an early day ‘Home Guard’ of civilian volunteers, created as a further line of defence, in the event of a possible French invasion.

Height – 21.5 cm, 8 1/2”.

Width – 7.7 cm, 3”.

Depth – 7.7 cm, 3”.

Condition: Excellent. No damage. No restoration.
