Liberty Style Hanging Book Shelves C1910

Description

This unusual SET OF HANGING BOOK SHELVES, in the Liberty Style, date from circa 1910.

The up stand at the back is carved, in stylised lettering, with a line from the Irish Poet, Wentworth Dillon (1633-1685), ‘CHOOSE AN AUTHOR AS YOU WOULD CHOOSE A FRIEND’.

The decorated panel of a Sail before a Sun or Moon, on the central door, has been formed by masking and staining the wood.

The verse from which the inscription is taken reads:

Examine how your Humour is inclin’d

And which the Ruling Passion of your Mind

Then seek a Poet who your way does bend

And chuse an Author as you chuse a Friend
