Daum Summer Landscape Vase

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Solo Antiques
Description

Daum Summer Landscape vase. Of globe form with gently dimpled sides with a rare trefoil top. Beautifully enamelled and very finely acid etched with a delightful and subtle summer landscape. The use of the intercalaire technique for the background to the landscape further enhances the detail of this charming piece. Signed in black enamel to the underside - Daum Nancy and with the cross of Lorraine and initialled AR. This is a stunning piece and a very fine example of the master craftsmanship of Daum. Excellent original condition

The Daum Glassworks was established in Nancy, France in 1875 and is still making glass today albeit of a very different style. The family were originally Lawyers not glassmakers. Jean Daum the father of Antonin and Auguste originally took over the glassworks as part payment of a debt. Auguste (also a lawyer) joined his Father shortly afterwards and started to develop and expand the business. Auguste and Antonin and later Michel were the main family members involved in the major development of the Company. The Company employed major designers including Jacques Gruber, Amalric Walter, Henri Bergé, and in more recent times Philippe Stark and Salvador Dali. They developed and patented many techniques in glassmaking and were always at the forefront of design and manufacturing. In 1900 at the Exposition Universelle they were awarded a Grand Prix medal and quickly became one of the major makers in the Art Nouveau movement.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Nancy, France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Daum glass from this period features naturalistic motifs, particularly seasonal landscapes, executed through complex glassmaking techniques.

Craftspeople layered multiple colours of glass, which were subsequently acid-etched to create multi-dimensional landscape scenes, often finished with finely detailed hand-painted enamel highlights.

Authentic pieces typically feature painted, engraved, or acid-etched signatures, complex multi-layered cameo work with distinct tactile depth, and refined hand-enameled details rather than printed transfers.

Position small art glass vessels on illuminated shelves, window sills, or mantels where natural or directional light can highlight the translucent coloured glass and delicate etched details.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or dishwashers that could strip delicate enamel paint.
