Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French Clock by Miroy Frères

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1860 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A superb early antique French ormolu and Sèvres style porcelain clock. It is made of exquisite ormolu (finely gilded bronze) mounted with very finely painted Sèvres style porcelain, exotic birds and flowers, with a blue ground. It is by the Parisian bronze founder / retailer Miroy Frères with the movement by Vincenti.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper and is complete with its original finely cut gilt hands and is faintly signed for the bronze founder / retailer. Please note that this type of clock does not have a glazed bezel or a rear door.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Vincenti et Cie. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The frame of the urn does have some wear. The porcelain is also excellent. The dial is very good, there is a chip to the left hand winding hole and the Miroy signature is rubbed and faint.

The clock is signed to both the dial and the movement for the Parisian bronze founder / retailer Miroy Frères. The company is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horlogers Francais as working in 1860 at Rue d'Angouleme, Paris. The movement also has the mark of the clockmaker Vincenti.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French ormolu mantel clocks feature gilded bronze castings combined with hand-painted porcelain panels or enamel dials. Popularised during the Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Second Empire periods, these timepieces served as both functional instruments and decorative status symbols.

These clocks typically feature fire-gilded bronze (ormolu) cases adorned with porcelain plaques. The porcelain often displays ground colours like bleu celeste alongside hand-painted floral, avian, or figurative vignettes and gilded embellishments.

Authentic pieces display heavy gilded bronze casting with hand-chased details and assembly marks or maker stamps on the movement backplate. Porcelain panels show hand-painted motifs with subtle variations rather than modern printed designs.

Positioning an ormolu clock atop a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table creates a clear focal point. Set against neutral backgrounds or dark wall paint, the contrast highlights the classical casting and vibrant porcelain details.

Dust the clock gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or artist brush to clean delicate cast relief. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as these can strip the original gilded layer and damage painted porcelain.
