Etching 1802 Titled “elocution At Brentford Or Middlesex Comedians”
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Chairman Antiques
A rare coloured political etching dated 1802 and titled “Elocution at Brentford, or Middlesex comedians”.
Description
Burdett (right), in profile to the left, stoops, both arms raised and fists clenched, declaiming at his two disconcerted opponents who stand together, turning away but looking sideways at the orator. They are Mainwaring (left) and Aris the Governor of Cold Bath Prison holding a bunch of keys. Burdett is strikingly the man of fashion as compared with the others; he is slim with tight-fitting breeches and tail-coat, choker cravat, and tasselled Hessians. He shouts: ''Bastiles - Dungeons - damp-cells - chains - fetters - fury - horror - starvation - suspension - solitary-imprisonment - bread and water - rain - cold - hunger - whips - cat o nine tails - fire - death - hanging - drowning - shameful - abominable - terrible - Bow-wow-wow-wow!'' The other two are plainly dressed in an old-fashioned way. Mainwaring says: ''Mercy on us, how he foams - he certainly ought to be committed.'' Aris says: ''I wish I had you my Lad - in one of my little commodius [sic] apartments - I''d teach you to abuse tender hearted Gentlemen.'' July 1802. One you’ll find in the British Museum and indeed, this one is for sale. There is a 2p coin size loss to the bottom right of the image. A minor stain to the left bottom and an historic centre gold. Probably framed in 1973 in its current enclosure. A rare satirical etching for sale. Print made by: Piercy Roberts
After: George Moutard Woodward
Published by: Piercy Roberts 1802. British satirical school.
