A GEORGE III WALNUT AND CHEQUER OUTLINED STICK BAROMETER
The arched pediment above glazed panel door with signed silvered scale and vernier, above the trunk with exposed tube and domed reservoir cover.
Probably the most distinctive of the Ortelli stick barometers. Signed N.Ortelly & Co., Macclesfield and datable to circa 1810. Walnut veneer laid in herringbone pattern, with rope inlay to shaft and around door - making it less common. Vernier and (replacement) alcohol thermometer, brass finial; original cistern cover most unusually inlaid with floral motif. 95cm. The engraving is unusual because while the town name is elegantly engraved in cursive script, the Ortelli name looks somewhat more crude.
Ivory certificate No XWDX5MUM
