A Large Victorian Solid Silver Snuff Box with Cast Border - Edward Smith 1847

19th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this impressive & large solid silver snuff box made in Birmingham in 1847 with the maker's mark of Edward Smith.

This snuff box presents an array of highly ornate & intricate Victorian decorations with the entirety of the box decorated in different techniques.

The box is constructed from a good gauge of heavy silver and its presence is evermore apparent when held in hand. Such heft would be appropriate due to its size/intended use as a table snuff box.

The top lid is ornately embellished with an applied-cast silver border of acanthus & floral scrolls that surround a hand-engraved presentation cartouche. The sides of the box are engine-turned with fine geometric motifs of lines that accentuate the scalloped borders.

As a further testament to the high degree of skill, even the base of the box which would normally be unseen when placed on a table, is equally, if not more impressive in design. The base has been utilised to display the art and technical skill of engine turning with various interchanging motifs, finished & layered with fine hand-engraved decorations of scrolls and a flower bouquet.

One can imagine the amount of skill, patience and care that has gone into crafting and embellishing a single small object with the amalgamation of each part resulting in a quality feel when held in hand.

The presentation engraving reads: "Presented to Francis Chambers Junr Esqr. by B.Cowman Taylor in appreciation of the talent displayed on his premises, 10 Queen St Cheapside March 1858".

The interior of the snuff box is fully gilt with a beautiful rich gold tone. The layer of gold not only acts as an accent to the silver exterior but prevents the contents inside from tarnishing the silver.

In the modern day, such boxes could be used to store small items, mints and pills in addition to the traditional snuff (tobacco) that would have been stored within.

A full set of English hallmarks are present on the interior lid/base of the box.

A fine Victorian snuff box ideal for box collectors or as a distinguished gift.
