Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bureau de Dame is a compact, slant-front ladies writing desk that originated during the French Louis XV period in the mid-18th century. Characterised by slender cabriole legs, decorative wood veneers, and ornate metal mounts, it was designed specifically for personal correspondence.

These desks were typically constructed using oak frames veneered with exotic hardwoods such as kingwood, rosewood, and tulipwood. They feature intricate marquetry or parquetry patterns, accented with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and leather writing surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, asymmetrical gilt-bronze mounts, original maker stamps (stamped directly into the timber frame), and natural signs of timber shrinkage or oxidisation. The proportions consistently feature gentle S-curves without straight lines.

Position the desk as a focal accent piece against a minimalist wall or within a bedroom nook. Balance its ornate marquetry and ormolu mounts with contemporary artwork, clean lighting fixtures, and neutral drapery.

Maintain stable humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber shrinkage. Clean the woodwork with a soft, dry cloth and high-grade beeswax polish, avoiding water and solvent cleaners. Ormolu mounts should only be dusted gently to preserve their original patina.
