Kizil Ayak rugs are crafted by the Kizil Ayak sub-tribe of the Turkmen, known for their saturated red palette and geometric tribal motifs. A seh-mihrab design incorporates a triple niche pattern at the top of the field, traditionally indicating its function as a prayer mat.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool foundation. Natural dyes traditionally produce the distinct shades of madder red, indigo blue, and deep dark brown or charcoal.

Authentic pieces feature slight asymmetrical variations in the hand-knotted weave, natural dye shade variations (abrash), and traditional tribal motifs such as guls or mihrab arches. The reverse side shows tight knotting that mirrors the front pattern precisely.
