Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, mahogany was favoured for fine cabinetry due to its stability, rich grain pattern, and durability. Chests of drawers from this era typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flame mahogany veneers, and classic configurations such as short upper drawers positioned over full-width long drawers.

Craftsmen primarily used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings. Construction typically features hand-sawn dovetails, cockbeaded drawer edges, solid brass drop handles or lion-mask pull rings, and hand-carved feet or aprons.

Authentic pieces often display hand-planed backboards, non-uniform dovetail joints on the drawer linings, and natural shrinkage marks around iron lock plates and brass hardware. Additionally, smooth operational wear on the bottom drawer runners indicates genuine period age.

Pair a dark mahogany chest of drawers with neutral walls and soft textiles to create balanced visual contrast in a contemporary bedroom or hallway. Layering contemporary artwork or modern table lamps on the top surface bridges the aesthetic gap between traditional craftsmanship and current interior trends.

Preserve mahogany by placing it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and colour fading. Dust regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly following the natural direction of the wood grain.
