A Very Fine and Rare Chinese Hand Carved Agate Hardstone Figure of the Goddess Guanyin.

This superb Chinese hardstone agate hardstone figure is of the Chinese Buddhist goddess Guanyin who is the goddess of mercy and compassion. It is very skilfully carved from a solid block of agate rock which has wonderful natural colouring varying from an opaque honey grey to a rich orange brown which has tortoise shell patterned natural inclusions. Guanyin is modelled in a standing position with an exotic bird carrying a string of pearls in its beak landing on her flowing robes and in one hand she is holding a vessel or vase from which she is emptying the contents. This is very symbolic. This beautiful figure includes the original fine hardwood stand which has floral carved and pierced decoration with raised and shaped feet. The top is recessed to locate and hold the figure. Chinese, circa 1930
