Antique Mahogany Cased Barograph

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality early 20th Century Barograph. The barograph is cased in mahogany with a stepped base and bevelled glass. It has a drawer for storing new and used charts and it stands on four small bracket feet.

The clockwork eight-day movement is housed in the drum, fitted with a seven day chart which covers one rotation of the drum. The aneroid barometer mechanism has 7 stacked vacuum capsules and utilises a gate suspension for improved sensitivity. The metal pen nib is on the end of a long arm which moves to record the pressure as the drum rotates. It also has an additional thermometer within the case.

It comes with a large number of recording charts and it has a small glass ink bottle in a brass holder. New ink and charts are both readily available to buy online.

The clockwork mechanism is in good working order and the drum rotates as it should. I have not referenced the pressure readings for accuracy but I have no reason to believe it shouldn't be in working order. It will however of course need calibrating and setting up to the correct pressure when it arrives with you (any queries please ask).

It is in excellent condition for its age and has clearly been very well looked after. There are small marks here and there commensurate with age but there is no damage to report and the wood has a nice aged patina.

The case measures approximately 15" (38cm) wide by 9" (23cm) deep and 8 1/2" (22cm) tall. The drum has a standard diameter of 4" (10cm).

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
