Victorian Military Chest

19th century
Description

This Victorian campaign chest was made circa 1870.

The Victorian campaign chest would have been commissioned / purchased from a specialist military officers outfitters, normally the Army & Navy stores. This example is their classic design, although it does not have their trade label.

Once an Officer gained his commission, he would then go and purchase all the items he needed for his future campaigns.

It was made in 2 parts so that it could be put in its own travelling cases to send on its trips around the world.

Made of teak, a wood that is very good for this use, as it is resistant to seawater, also being a hardwood, it was resistant to the knocks it was bound to receive as it was packed on sailing ships, steamers, wagons, or even Elephants as it was taken to the Officers postings around the East, normally India and the Northwest Passage.

The top section is fitted a pair of half width drawers with the classic deep drawer under these, that were for uniforms and the headwear. The bottom half is fitted with 2 full width drawers.

This Victorian campaign chest is fitted with the original flush inset handles and brass corners.

Imagine your friends and family enthralled as their imaginations are sparked by the stories this Military chest could tell recalling all of the escapades it had been through during the officers’ postings around the world.
